How to Register for NECO (SSCE Internal and GCE) in Nigeria

The National Examinations Council (NECO) runs Nigeria's other Senior School Certificate Examination. Its certificate is accepted alongside WAEC's for university and polytechnic admission, for JAMB, and by employers across the country. Many candidates sit both exams, and many more use the NECO external exam, popularly called NECO GCE, to fix a weak subject or complete their O'Level requirements.

There are two NECO SSCE exams:

  • SSCE Internal, written around June and July by final-year students in registered secondary schools.
  • SSCE External (GCE), written around November and December by private candidates outside regular schools.

This guide explains how registration works for both, what it costs, what you need, the current exam format, and how to check your result and get your certificate.

Registering for the 2026 NECO GCE? Normal registration for the 2026 SSCE External closes at midnight on 26 October 2026. Late registration runs from 27 October to 3 November 2026 at an extra ₦5,000, and the exam holds from 4 to 21 November 2026. Register now if you plan to sit it.

The short version

SSCE External (GCE):

  1. Create an account on NECO's external registration portal, ssceexternal.neco.gov.ng.
  2. Pay the registration fee online.
  3. Enter your bio-data, including your NIN, and choose your subjects and centre.
  4. Complete fingerprint capture at a reputable cybercafé or registration centre.
  5. Print your photocard, get it signed by a qualified referee, and print your timetable.

SSCE Internal:

  1. Your school registers you during your final year.
  2. Give your school accurate details and complete biometric capture.
  3. Check every detail before your school submits it.

What has changed: NECO is moving to computer-based exams

Like WAEC, NECO is moving its exams onto computers. The 2026 SSCE Internal was conducted in computer-based format, with each candidate receiving a unique, system-generated set of questions. The Federal Government has said it will complete the full transition only when everything is ready.

The 2026 SSCE External is being conducted in dual mode, with some subjects taken as a computer-based examination and others with pen and paper. NECO lists which mode applies to each subject, so check the format for your subjects and practise accordingly.

If you have not used a computer-based test before, practise answering questions on a computer before the exam. Getting comfortable with the screen, the navigation and the timer protects marks you have earned.

How to register for NECO GCE (SSCE External), step by step

What you need before you start

  • A valid NIN. NECO asks for your National Identification Number during registration. If you do not have one, our guide to getting your NIN in Nigeria explains the process.
  • A recent passport photograph taken within the last six months, with a white background. A system camera can be used during registration.
  • A working email address or phone number to create your account.
  • Your subject choices. Confirm the subjects your intended course requires, including English Language and Mathematics.
  • A payment method: ATM card, internet banking, USSD, wallet or bank branch payment.

Step 1: Create your account

Go to ssceexternal.neco.gov.ng, NECO's official external registration portal. Create an account with your email address or phone number, then activate it.

Step 2: Pay the registration fee

Pay the registration fee online through the portal. For the 2026 SSCE External, the fee was ₦30,000, which covered a four-figure mathematical table and a waterproof certificate jacket. Stamp duty, service charges and Remita charges are added, and the fee is non-refundable. NECO listed ₦43,000 for walk-in registration.

Step 3: Enter your bio-data and choose your subjects

Buy your registration quota and fill in your bio-data, including your NIN. Then choose your subjects and examination centre.

Check your name and date of birth carefully. Use the exact spelling and order on your birth certificate, NIN and any earlier certificates. NECO allows only one name or passport correction after upload and before the exam, so get it right the first time.

Step 4: Complete fingerprint capture

Visit a reputable cybercafé or registration centre to capture your fingerprints and complete your registration. Your fingerprints are verified at the exam, and NECO treats a mismatch as impersonation, so the person who registers must be the person who writes the exam.

Step 5: Print your photocard and timetable

Print at least one clear copy of your photocard and your timetable.

The referee section of the photocard must be signed and stamped by a qualifying person, such as:

  • A school principal
  • An ordained clergyman or chief imam
  • A commissioned officer
  • A senior civil servant on Grade Level 14 or above
  • A legal practitioner with at least ten years' experience

You no longer need to take your photocard to a NECO state office for stamping.

Reprint your photocard no later than two weeks before the exam to confirm your examination centre, in case it has changed.

Worked example: Musa fixes his Chemistry

Musa is 19 and lives in Kaduna. He has his NECO and WAEC results from school, but a D7 in Chemistry is blocking his application for Pharmacy.

Mid-October. He checks JAMB's brochure and his target universities' rules, and finds that both accept two sittings. He confirms his NIN details match his birth certificate and his earlier NECO certificate.

Before the deadline. He creates an account on ssceexternal.neco.gov.ng, pays the ₦30,000 fee plus charges, enters his bio-data and NIN, and registers for Chemistry, English, Mathematics, Biology and Physics, so all his required subjects come from strong sittings. He completes fingerprint capture at a cybercafé near his house.

Photocard. He prints his photocard and asks his old school principal to sign and stamp the referee section. Two weeks before the exam, he reprints it to confirm his centre.

Exam month. He checks which of his subjects are computer-based and which are on paper, practises past questions on a computer, arrives 30 minutes early for every paper and leaves his phone at home.

Results. He checks his result on results.neco.gov.ng with a NECO token and combines his two sittings for his Pharmacy application.

The lesson: Musa registered before the deadline, matched his details across all his documents and confirmed his institutions' sitting rules before paying.

How school candidates register for NECO SSCE Internal

If you are in your final year at a registered secondary school, your school registers you for the SSCE Internal.

  1. Give your school accurate details. Your full name and date of birth exactly as on your birth certificate.
  2. Choose the right subjects. Include the subjects your intended course requires, especially English Language and Mathematics.
  3. Complete biometric capture when your school arranges it.
  4. Review your details before submission. Ask to see your registration record and correct any error before it goes to NECO.

Internal registration fees

The NECO SSCE Internal fee was ₦27,500 per candidate. In June 2026, the Federal Ministry of Education approved a uniform fee of ₦50,000 per candidate for NECO and WAEC school examinations, taking effect from the NECO SSCE Internal 2027. Some state governments pay these fees for public school students, so ask your school what applies to you.

Exam day rules

  • Arrive early. NECO expects candidates to be seated 30 minutes before each paper starts.
  • Bring your photocard and timetable.
  • Leave phones, smart watches and other electronic devices at home. They are banned from exam centres.
  • Follow your centre's instructions for computer-based and paper-based papers.

Rules that can cost you your result

  • Do not register more than once. NECO cancels all the results of a candidate who registers more than once.
  • Do not send someone else to write for you. Fingerprints are verified at the exam.
  • Avoid "expo" and "runs." Anyone selling questions or promising guaranteed grades is running a scam, and involvement in malpractice can lead to your result being withheld or cancelled. With computer-based exams generating unique question sets for each candidate, leaked papers are also far less likely to be real.

These scams look a lot like job and admission scams: someone promises a guaranteed outcome if you pay first. Our guide to spotting scams explains the warning signs.

Checking your NECO result

NECO results are checked on results.neco.gov.ng:

  1. Create an account on the result portal with your email and phone number.
  2. Buy a result checker token. On NECO's portal it costs ₦1,000, paid through Remita by card, USSD or bank transfer. Authorised vendors may charge more.
  3. Select your exam year and type, such as SSCE External, then enter your token and registration number.
  4. View and print your result.

One token can be used to check the same result up to five times.

You can also check by SMS. Send NECO*YourExamNumber*YourToken*ExamYear, with no spaces, to 32327. You need a token you have already bought and at least ₦50 airtime on a supported network.

How the 2026 Internal results went

For the 2026 SSCE Internal, 1,371,992 candidates sat the exam. 58.67% obtained five credits or more including English Language and Mathematics, and malpractice cases fell to 1,496, from 3,878 in 2025. English and Mathematics remain the subjects that decide most admissions, so give them extra preparation time.

Your NECO certificate

Your online result shows your electronic certificate with your passport photograph, which you can print or save as a PDF. Original certificates are released later, usually one to two years after the exam. External candidates collect theirs from the NECO state office where they wrote the exam.

Check every detail on your result, and keep your registration number and a digital copy safe. Employers, universities and government agencies may verify your certificate years from now.

Uploading your result for admission

If you are seeking admission, your NECO result must be uploaded to your JAMB profile before you can be offered a place. Our guide to registering for JAMB explains the UTME, O'Level upload and accepting admission on CAPS. If you are also sitting WAEC, our guide to registering for WAEC covers both its school and private candidate exams.

Your NECO certificate and your career

Your SSCE certificate stays on your record for life. It is required for admission, and many employers, the public service, and military and paramilitary recruitment exercises ask for it. When you start applying for internships, scholarships or jobs, list it correctly on your CV, with the exam body, year and key grades where relevant. Our beginner's guide to making a CV for a job shows you how.
