How to Apply for NYSC in Nigeria: The Complete Registration Guide
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is the one-year national service that stands between most Nigerian graduates and their first full-time job. Many employers in Nigeria, including the public service and most large private companies, will not hire a graduate without an NYSC discharge certificate or an exemption certificate. Getting mobilised smoothly is therefore one of the most important steps after graduation.
The process has changed in recent years. Registration now depends on your NIN, your JAMB record and, since late 2025, NERD clearance for your final-year project. A mismatch in any of these can stop you from registering at all. This guide explains every stage: who is eligible, what to prepare, how to register online, what to take to camp, and what the service year involves.
The short version
- Make sure you are eligible and that your name is on your institution's Senate list.
- Get your NERD clearance by having your final-year project uploaded and verified.
- Check that your NIN, JAMB and school records match.
- Register online on the NYSC portal during your batch's registration window, including photo capture and thumbprint.
- Print your call-up letter when it is released.
- Report to orientation camp with your documents for the three-week orientation course.
How NYSC mobilisation works
NYSC mobilises graduates in three batches a year, called Batch A, Batch B and Batch C. Each batch can be split into streams. For each batch, NYSC publishes a timetable covering:
- Upload of Senate lists by institutions
- The online registration window, which is often only about a week long
- Release of call-up letters
- Orientation camp dates
For example, 2026 Batch C online registration ran from 7 to 13 September 2026, Stream I camp ran from 30 September to 20 October 2026, and Stream II camp was scheduled for 4 to 24 November 2026. The next batch to watch is 2027 Batch A, expected early in 2027. NYSC announces each timetable on its official portal and social media channels.
The windows are short and do not wait for anyone. Prepare everything before your batch's registration opens.
Who is eligible, exempted or excluded
| Status | Who | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible to serve | Full-time graduates of accredited Nigerian or foreign institutions, under 30 at graduation | Mobilisation for the service year and, at the end, a discharge certificate |
| Exempted | Graduates aged over 30 at graduation, and some other categories set by NYSC rules | An exemption certificate, without serving |
| Excluded | Graduates of part-time, sandwich, distance learning or correspondence programmes | An exclusion letter, without serving |
Both the exemption certificate and the exclusion letter are official documents. Employers that require NYSC will ask for one of them if you did not serve, so keep yours safe.
For locally trained graduates, NYSC generally relies on the date of birth in your JAMB record to decide the age rule, so make sure your JAMB details are correct.
Step 1: Make sure your name is on the Senate list
You can only register if your institution has uploaded your name to NYSC on its Senate list (or Academic Board list for polytechnics), which confirms you graduated.
- Check your status on the NYSC portal, portal.nysc.org.ng, before registration opens.
- If your name is missing, contact your institution's Student Affairs or NYSC desk at once. Only your institution can upload or correct your record.
Common reasons for a missing name include outstanding fees, unresolved results and late uploads by the institution. Sort these out before your batch's timetable starts.
Step 2: Get your NERD clearance
Since 6 October 2025, compliance with the National Policy for the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) has been mandatory for NYSC mobilisation and exemption. The Federal Government introduced it to curb certificate fraud and confirm genuine academic work.
In practice:
- Your final-year project, thesis or dissertation must be uploaded to the NERD platform, usually through your institution, and verified.
- Once verified, you can generate a NERD clearance slip.
- NYSC has made it clear: no NERD clearance, no NYSC registration. You will also need the slip at camp.
The requirement applies to graduates mobilised from early 2026 onwards, including foreign-trained graduates. Verification is not instant, so start as soon as you finish your project, and ask your department how your institution handles NERD uploads.
Step 3: Get your NIN and records to match
NYSC registration uses your National Identification Number, which pulls your name and date of birth from the NIMC database. For locally trained graduates, the portal also checks your record against JAMB's records.
Before your batch's registration opens, check that your name and date of birth are identical across:
- Your NIN record
- Your JAMB record
- Your statement of result and school records
If they differ, correct them at the source first. Our guide to getting your NIN in Nigeria covers NIN corrections, and our JAMB guide explains how your JAMB record and admission were created. A mismatch is one of the most common reasons graduates miss a batch.
Step 4: Register online during your batch's window
When registration opens, go to the official NYSC portal, portal.nysc.org.ng.
- Choose the right option.
- Fresh Registration if you are registering for the first time.
- Revalidation if you were mobilised in an earlier batch but did not report to camp.
- Login if you started registering earlier and did not finish. Never create a second account.
- Enter your NIN and details, and check what the portal pulls from your records.
- Capture your photograph with a webcam. Dress properly and make sure the photo is clear; blurred photos are rejected.
- Capture your thumbprint. You must do this yourself. Proxy thumbprinting is not allowed.
- Upload any documents that apply to you, such as:
- Marital documents, if you are a married woman seeking to serve where your husband lives
- Medical or disability documents, with your status declared on the portal
- Armed Forces documents, if applicable
- Check every detail. Your date of birth, date of graduation and course of study cannot be corrected after camp registration.
- Submit before the deadline and print your registration slip, often called the green card.
Do it yourself, or watch closely. Many graduates register at a cybercafé because of the camera and fingerprint scanner. That is fine, but stay present and check every field. Do not hand your login details to an agent who promises a particular state of deployment. NYSC posts graduates centrally, and no agent can guarantee your state.
Foreign-trained graduates
Graduates of foreign institutions register online like everyone else, but with extra steps:
- During registration, select a centre for pre-camp physical verification.
- Upload your documents with your name exactly as it appears on your certificate.
- Attend physical verification in person with your original degree certificate, transcript, international passport (data page and entry and exit stamps) and evidence of your institution's accreditation, plus certified English translations of any document not in English.
- If your institution has not been evaluated, you may need an evaluation letter from the Federal Ministry of Education.
- After verification, print your clearance slip and take it to camp with your originals.
If you are studying abroad and will need to travel home for verification, make sure your passport is valid. Our international passport guide explains renewal from abroad.
Step 5: Print your call-up letter
After registration closes, NYSC releases call-up letters, usually in phases. Log in to your dashboard to print yours. It shows:
- Your state of deployment
- Your orientation camp location
- Your reporting date
- Your call-up number
Your state of deployment is decided by NYSC. Married women can apply for a marital concession to serve in their husband's state, and corps members with verified medical conditions can apply for consideration, but most postings are assigned centrally.
Step 6: Prepare for orientation camp
The orientation course lasts three weeks. You register at camp, are sworn in, and take part in drills, lectures, and skills and entrepreneurship training.
Documents to bring
- Your printed call-up letter
- Your green card (signed registration printout)
- Your statement of result, endorsed by your institution
- Your final-year institutional ID card
- A medical certificate of fitness from a government or military hospital. Certificates from private clinics are commonly rejected.
- Your NERD clearance slip
- Passport photographs on a white background; bring plenty
- Polytechnic graduates: your ND certificate as well
- Professionals such as doctors, nurses and pharmacists: your professional licence or registration certificate
- Foreign-trained graduates: your clearance slip, international passport and original credentials
Bring the originals and several photocopies of everything.
What to pack
Your call-up letter gives the official list. It typically includes white T-shirts, white shorts, white canvas shoes and socks, personal toiletries, a padlock and, at some camps, bedding. Leave valuables and large amounts of cash at home.
Worked example: Ngozi's mobilisation
Ngozi graduated in Mass Communication from a federal university in 2026 and is aiming for 2027 Batch A.
Three months before registration. She confirms that her project has been uploaded to NERD through her department and prints her NERD clearance slip once it is verified. She checks her NIN, her JAMB record and her statement of result, and notices that her NIN has her middle name missing. She corrects it with NIMC.
When the Senate list is uploaded. She checks the NYSC portal and confirms that her name is there.
Registration week. On the first day of the window, she registers at a cybercafé near her house. She stays beside the attendant, checks her date of birth, graduation date and course before the thumbprint capture, and prints her green card.
Call-up. When call-up letters are released, she prints hers and sees that she has been posted to Kwara. She gets her medical certificate from a government hospital, gathers her documents and photocopies, and buys her camp whites.
Camp. She reports on the first day with every document, registers quickly and is sworn in.
The lesson: almost every mobilisation problem is created months before registration, in mismatched records and missing uploads. Fix those early and the registration week is simple.
The service year: allowance, posting and skills
Monthly allowance
Corps members receive a monthly allowance from the Federal Government. In March 2025, NYSC began paying the increased allowance of ₦77,000 a month, up from ₦33,000. Many state governments and employers of corps members (places of primary assignment) add their own stipends.
Place of primary assignment (PPA)
After camp, you are posted to a place of primary assignment, such as a school, hospital, government agency or private company, where you work for the rest of the year. You also take part in community development service and monthly clearance.
Skills acquisition (SAED)
NYSC's Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme offers training in trades and business skills during camp and the service year. If you plan to start a business, use the year to build a skill and test your idea. Our guide to registering a business in Nigeria explains how to formalise it.
Discharge certificate
At the end of the service year, after your final clearance, you receive your certificate of national service, the discharge certificate that employers ask for. Keep it, and a scanned copy, safe.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Records that do not match. Your NIN, JAMB record and statement of result must agree.
- No NERD clearance. Start the upload as soon as your project is approved.
- Creating a second portal account. Log in to your existing account instead.
- Letting someone else do your thumbprint. It is not allowed and can invalidate your registration.
- Missing the registration window. Windows are short; watch NYSC's official channels.
- Paying for "posting influence." Agents cannot guarantee your state of deployment.
- A private clinic medical certificate. Get it from a government or military hospital.
Using your service year for your career
Your service year is often your first real work experience, and it is one of the best times to build your CV. Choose a PPA that matches your career goals where you can, take on real responsibilities, learn tools and skills, and keep a record of what you achieve.
Recruiters hiring new graduates look for evidence of what you did during NYSC: projects you handled, results you delivered and skills you built. Start your job search before your passing-out date, so you are not starting from zero when the allowance stops.
