Job Description

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is now accepting applications for the 2027 Fund Internship Programme (FIP) – Economists, a paid internship opportunity open to PhD students in economics and related fields. This is a 10 to 12-week internship running from June 7 to August 27, 2027, based at IMF headquarters in Washington, D.C. Selected interns will work directly with experienced IMF economists on individual research and project assignments addressing real-world macroeconomic and policy challenges affecting the IMF's 191 member countries. Some interns present findings to IMF staff and have their work published internally. This is one of the most competitive economics internship programmes in the world — open to candidates globally, including Africans and Nigerians pursuing PhDs abroad or locally. Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD programme in macroeconomics or a related field
  • Within one to two years of completing the PhD at the time of application
  • Must be under 32 years old when the internship begins in June 2027
  • Must return to academic studies after the internship ends
  • Excellent written and spoken English proficiency
  • Strong analytical, quantitative and computer skills
