How To Build A Strong Resume That Stands Out To Employers

Resume writing has become perhaps the most difficult part of getting a job. You may be an asset to the company, and the position you're applying for may have achieved a lot and completed a couple of relevant courses, with five or seven years of experience in the respective field.

Still, your resume can end up in a pile of rejected ones if your skills and expertise are not reflected in your resume convincingly.

First of all, employers don’t read resumes all day long. Sometimes, they can even dismiss a CV by looking at just for some moments. Secondly, the increasing use of AI in resume writing distracts employers from paying full attention to all of them.

So, now, with the overtly competitive job market and flood of AI-generated resumes, you have to make a more impressive, stronger resume to get hired.

Strategies To Build A Strong Resume

It may seem quite difficult to write a resume while keeping multiple factors, hiring metrics, job descriptions, and your own skills and expertise in mind.

On top of that, employers are using different tools like a strong AI detector or language-checking tool during a CV evaluation process. So, using an AI writing tool is never a good option to create a CV if you really want to impress employers and get selected for the position.

Instead, you can follow the strategies mentioned below to make an impressive and powerful resume that will help get the job.

Read The Job Description

The very first thing before writing a resume for a job is to read the job description, required qualifications, and expertise very carefully and thoroughly.

Your resume writing will depend on the specific job description you want to apply for. By going through the job description, you will understand where you need to make adjustments, how you need to write the job summary, and exactly which part of your expertise you should highlight in the resume.

For example, if you are in the marketing business and you have worked in multiple marketing fields like digital marketing, product marketing, brand management, and market research analyst.

Among them, you need to highlight the one in your resume that is the closest to the required expertise of the next job you want to get.

Follow A Clean Structure

An important thing that you must follow in resume writing is a proper structure and flow.

A strong and decent resume structure can start with your name and contact details in the header. Then write your career summary or career objective in the next section. Don’t write more than three lines in the career summary.

Then provide a short and very distinctive list of core skills. Avoid writing seven or ten generalized skills like hardworking or critical thinking. Rather, write five solid skills that you are really good at.

After that, you can add all your experiences and the names of previous organizations. If you are a fresher, you can write about your internship, workshops and conferences you attended, voluntary activities, competitions you participated in, and different certificate courses you did.

After that, add your educational qualifications or alma mater, mentioning the year of starting and passing, and the grades. Then add the list of your publications if you have any. Also, add the links to your portfolios and LinkedIn accounts.

Finally, give two names, it can be your employer, colleague or professor, as your references with their designation, company name, and contact details, who can provide positive reviews about your expertise, nature, behaviour, and work.

You can follow this order and structure and write a good-to-go resume.

Impactful Career Summary

Since employers do not read the whole resume these days, you must write a powerful career summary that takes you to the next phase or gets you an interview call.

Keep in mind that the hiring teams do not want to know what you did or what you can do. Rather, they would be impressed if they see the impact you created with your work or the real contribution you provided to the companies you worked for.

Also, they really like numbers and statistics as proof of your expertise. So, try to mention if you have made any major changes in sales or the position of your company with your role instead of repeating anything that already exists in the CV.

Align Your Resume With Different Jobs

You need to remember that you should not use one resume written for a particular job or a generalized, vague resume for all job positions.

You should apply with a tailored CV for each company and role. And you must keep changing and updating the resume as you attempt to apply for different job positions at different companies.

However, it is not natural that you already know what kind of specific roles and positions you want to apply to, and which jobs you are suitable for. So, it is better to keep two or three resumes where you can make changes according to the job requirements.

Provide Correct URLs

These days, employers and hiring teams attentively check your portfolio, LinkedIn accounts, and even your social media accounts.

By assessing these accounts and platforms, they get reassured about the credibility of the information you provide in the resume to some extent. Then they see your activities, like conferences or workshops you attended. Also, they might notice what kind of people you are connected to.

So, always make sure that you have given the proper links to all your portfolio and other accounts through which they can find them very easily. Moreover, keep in mind that the information in your resume should match your LinkedIn and social media profiles.

Final Thought

Your resume is the ultimate document that will decide where your career will go and whether you can get your desired job.

No matter how eligible you are or how hard you want a certain job, a bad CV can affect your career at the very beginning. Or it can restrict you from getting a job you deserve even after having experience of quite a lot of years.

So, design your resume wisely. Don’t write it like an essay or like a short note, like an unprofessional newbie. Write exactly what the hiring teams need to know about you in an organized way.

If you follow the points and structure mentioned above while writing it, you are good to go.
