How To Adapt To A New Workspace Without Losing Your Professional Identity
Starting in a new work place means learning new systems, working with unfamiliar colleagues, understanding a different management style and adapting to a new organization culture. Having a new work space is more than knowing where things are or understanding your job description, you need to become comfortable enough to work without having to change yourself completely. It is good to try to adapt to your environment but don’t change your values, identity and career goals just because you are trying to fit in.
Give yourself time to understand the environment : You can’t adapt to a workplace immediately you start working there. One mistake made by most people is that they try to copy other employees, change the way they communicate and start to copy some habits without knowing why they are put into place. It is best to understand the workplace before making any changes. Pay attention to how things are done after some time you may notice that some of these things are mandatory while some are just habits of employees. Take some time to observe the environment before knowing what you need to do, don’t just copy everything because you see your colleagues doing them.
Learn the difference between adaptability and conformity : Adaptability means adjusting because of the circumstances you are in while conformity means adjusting because you are pressured to fit in. You don’t have to change yourself just because everyone around behaves a particular way but some times you have to change somethings because you have no choice. The point is don’t change just because it violates your principles or values only change yourself because it improves your effectiveness this is considered as healthy adaptation.
Maintain a clear sense of what you bring : Working in a new workplace can make you feel inexperienced even when you have alot of experience. When you are not familiar with the work place it can make you feel like everyone is doing everything better than you do, you may try to imitate other people. A new work place may need you to learn new things but always remember not to forget your previous skills. Try to learn the new skills you are developing without loosing the skills you already have.
Understand what your employer actually need: where you previously worked would have required some skills and your new workplace requires complete different set of skills. Every employer prioritizes different things, understanding these things help you to adjust intelligently. This doesn’t mean you should change your standards it just means you should know what your new employer wants. You can use both your previous skills and the ones your employer wants, this would be convenient for you and you would continue to remain productive.
Don’t feel obligated to prove yourself immediately: Don’t try to demonstrate your value the moment you start working there, this may make it seem like you talk to much or make promises you cannot keep. You don’t need to establish your professional visibility with just one performance. Allow people to discover your value with time, do your job properly, don’t ask stupid questions, take feed back seriously and this behavior will give you a good reputation. You do not have to announce it, your work should demonstrate that you are professional.
Develop relationships while remaining authentic: Your relationship with colleagues can determine how comfortable you feel in a work place. Building a network doesn’t mean being friends with everyone or trying to change your self. Be respectful and approachable, join conversations, show interest in people’s work and learn their roles. You can have professional relationships while maintaining your personality and boundaries. Some workplaces have friend groups or cliques. You may notice that employees have friendships and social circles. You don’t need to become part of one of the groups just try to build trust.
Learn the unwritten rules carefully : Every workplace has rules and expectations. You need to try to learn the unwritten rules of any place you are working in. Unwritten rules are things like how to approach the manager, how disagreements are handled and how meetings are conducted. You can learn these rules to prevent unnecessary problems.
Adapt to different managers without losing yourself: One of the biggest adjustments is having a new manager. Different manager have different expectations. Try to learn your managers preferences, try to learn your managers likes and dislikes and to avoid making costly mistakes thus is called professional situation awareness. Through this you can learn how to communicate with different leaders while keeping your professionalism and judgment.
Don’t let the new work place define your entire identity : Your job is an essential part of your life but it should not become your only source of professional stability. Continue updating your CV, building professional relationships, and learning skills that will help you in the future. Your identity should be based on your capabilities and should not be dependent on your work place.
Continue setting personal standards: new employees often give up because they feel that it would be too difficult as a new employee you may start to do work that is uncomfortable for you. In a workplace you need to be valuable but boundaries are important.
Learn from criticism without losing your confidence : You will probably be criticized if you enter a new workplace , some will just correct you while some will tell you the organization preferences but don’t allow these corrections make you loose confidence. You can be experienced and still make some mistakes so don’t just conclude that you are incompetent after a few corrections.
The main idea
Try not to be to rigid and to have excessive conformity. Being too rigid can prevent you from working well with your coworkers. And being to eager can make you abandon your values. Going to a new work place should help you to adapt and not make you less authentic. Going to a new work place should give you the ability to build skills, improve your professional awareness and work with different organizations, while doing this you should be able to keep your professional values and standards.
