Job Description

The CERN Short-Term Internship Program 2026 gives eligible undergraduate and master's students the chance to gain practical experience at one of the world's leading scientific research organizations. Participants can work alongside scientists, engineers, and professionals in Geneva while receiving a monthly stipend and other support. The opportunity is also suitable for students who need practical training or industrial experience as part of their academic programme.

Responsibilities:

  • Gain hands-on practical experience in an assigned scientific, technical, engineering, computing, or administrative area.
  • Work alongside CERN scientists, engineers, and professionals during the internship.
  • Contribute to relevant practical projects and assigned activities under professional guidance.
  • Complete practical training or final-year academic project requirements where applicable.

Requirements:

  • Be a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State.
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student in a Technical Diploma, Bachelor's, or Master's degree programme.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Remain enrolled as a full-time student throughout the internship.
  • Have good working proficiency in English and/or French.
  • Be studying in an eligible academic field.
  • PhD students are not eligible.
  • Eligible fields include Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computing and Information Technology, Mathematics, Robotics, Materials and Surface Science, Instrumentation, Radiation Protection, Safety and Environmental Protection, Surveying, Ultra-High Vacuum Technology, Scientific Communication, Translation, Advanced Secretarial Studies, Accounting, Legal Services, Human Resources, Library and Information Science, and Logistics.
  • Required documents include an updated CV, latest academic transcript, and a mandatory reference letter from a university professor.
  • An optional reference letter from a previous internship may also be submitted.
