Job Description

Family Health International (FHI 360), a nonprofit human development organization working across health, education, nutrition, environment, economic development, and other development sectors, is seeking a Senior Accountant for its Country Office in Abuja. The role will provide finance, treasury, accounting, reporting, and compliance support, with a primary focus on the SPEED, ACE 1, and ACE 5 projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Support Country Office treasury operations, including daily cash monitoring, payment tracking, and monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Support banking relationships, bank account administration, and staff profiling requirements.
  • Prepare and submit weekly cash requests to the Hub.
  • Record intercompany transactions and third-party cash transfers accurately.
  • Prepare and review reconciliations for bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, travel advances, accounts receivable, accruals, and other control accounts.
  • Investigate and resolve reconciliation discrepancies and outstanding balances.
  • Ensure financial records are complete, accurate, properly documented, and compliant with organizational and donor requirements.
  • Review payment requests and supporting documents for compliance with internal controls, donor regulations, and financial procedures.
  • Support payment processing and monitor payment status.
  • Verify VAT, WHT, PAYE, and other statutory deductions.
  • Support statutory remittance schedules and timely payments to relevant authorities.
  • Prepare and review monthly financial reports and financial transactions.
  • Monitor project expenditure against approved budgets and analyze variances.
  • Support month-end and year-end financial closing activities.
  • Prepare audit schedules, financial analyses, and supporting documentation.
  • Support internal, external, and donor audit engagements and follow up on audit findings.
  • Monitor project budgets and expenditures for compliance with approved budgets and donor regulations.
  • Prepare pipeline reports, expenditure tracking reports, burn-rate analyses, and financial forecasts.
  • Support project budget development, revision, and financial planning.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to improve budget utilization and financial performance.
  • Maintain complete, organized, confidential, and audit-ready financial records.
  • Oversee petty cash management within the Country Office.
  • Provide technical support to deep field offices on cash management.
  • Create and maintain financial spreadsheets.
  • Collaborate with team leads to resolve expenditure and budget issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • BS/BA degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a recognized equivalent.
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience in accounting for international development programmes.
  • Familiarity with Department of State-funded programmes and NGOs in Nigeria is an advantage.
  • CPA, ACA, ACCA, or recognized equivalent is an advantage.
  • Experience working in multicultural environments is an advantage.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of accounting, budgeting, and fiscal control principles and practices.
  • Budget monitoring and general ledger skills.
  • Experience with automated accounting software, databases, spreadsheets, and Management Information Systems.
  • Accounting and bookkeeping skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive financial information with integrity and confidentiality.
  • Ability to accurately gather, verify, analyze, and manage financial and quantitative information.
  • Ability to work effectively with project staff, subcontractors, and recipients of assistance.
  • Ability to travel within Nigeria for a minimum of 25%.
