The Money: How Apprentice Pay Actually Works
Apprentice wages are set as a percentage of the local journeyman rate, rising on a published schedule as you complete hours and coursework. A typical progression runs from roughly 40 to 50 percent of journeyman scale in year one to 80 or 90 percent in the final year, with benefits (health coverage and pension contributions) phasing in early, in many locals from the first day.

- No tuition and no student debt; the industry funds your training.

- Meet the baseline requirements. Commonly: 18 or older, high school diploma or GED, proof of algebra completion (especially electrical), a valid driver's license, physical capability, and legal authorization to work in the US.
- Submit the application with documentation. Transcripts, ID, and often a fee in the tens of dollars. Accuracy matters; this is a formal process with formal disqualifiers.
- Take the aptitude test. The electrical programs use a standardized test covering algebra and functions plus reading comprehension.
