In a major reshuffle of Nigeria’s academic hierarchy, the University of Ibadan (UI) has emerged as the top university in the country for 2026, dethroning Covenant University (CU), which had held the top spot for the past two years. 

The new rankings, released recently via Times Higher Education (THE) data and widely reported in national media, mark a significant shift in Nigeria’s higher education landscape. 


🏛️ How the Rankings Were Determined

THE’s 2026 rankings evaluated 2,191 institutions across 115 countries, using 18 performance indicators grouped under five key dimensions:

  1. Teaching (learning environment)

  2. Research volume, income, and reputation

  3. Citations (research influence)

  4. Industry Income (knowledge transfer)

  5. International outlook (staff, students, research collaboration) 

The data set included 174.9 million citations, 18.7 million research publications, and survey responses from over 108,000 scholars worldwide

To qualify, institutions must offer undergraduate education, engage in multi-disciplinary research, and have published at least 1,000 papers between 2020 and 2024


🎯 Nigeria’s Top Universities in 2026

Among Nigeria’s higher institutions, 51 universities made it into THE’s 2026 global list. Here’s how the top ones fared:

  • University of Ibadan (UI) — Placed in the 801–1,000 global band, moving up from its fourth position in 2025 

  • University of Lagos (UNILAG) — Also in the 801–1,000 band, following UI as Nigeria’s second-best 

  • Bayero University, Kano (BUK) — Among the 1001–1200 band 

  • Covenant University (CU) — Now placed in the 1001–1200 tier, trailing UI and UNILAG 

  • Landmark University — Also appears in 1001–1200 band in 2026 

  • Other Notables

    • Ahmadu Bello University, FUT Minna, University of Ilorin, University of Jos, University of Nigeria, Nsukka all fall in the 1201–1500 band. 

    • A further 14 universities ranked above 1501, while 27 institutions were unranked globally.
