How to Get A Job without Being The Most Qualified Candidate

In most cases you don’t have to be the most qualified candidate applying for a job because employers are not only looking for qualified candidates they are looking for people that will perform well and meet all the companies needs. This is useful to fresh graduate’s, people trying to change careers and people who do not have all the recruitment an employer is asking for. Here’s how to remain relevant even when other applicants have more experience.

1. Understand what the employer actually needs:

Before applying for any job ask yourself, what is this person being hired to do. Not all job descriptions make the job look way more difficult than it actually is because they write down so many qualifications, certifications, skills and responsibilities but  it is best to just focus on the reason they need someone for the job. Focus on understanding the position and what the employers needs and demonstrating those skills, this is more valuable than most certifications and experience.

2. Don’t reject your self before the employer does :

Don’t refuse to apply for the job just because you don’t meet all the requirements. If an employer asks for some requirements and you don’t meet all of them that doesn’t mean that you cannot apply for the job. There is a difference between essential requirements and preferred requirements. You can still be a useful candidate if you can perform the fundamental needs of a job and you are ready to learn all the other skills needed. You need to remember that the goal is to complete even though you do not meet all the qualifications.

3. Sell your transferable skills:

You may not have been in that role before but you can perform most of the skills. People can transfer skills from one profession to another, try to connect the skills from your previous position to your current one. Instead of just listing out your skill tell your employer how you have used these skills in real life situation.

4. Give the employer evidence that you can do the work:

This one in particular is important when you are less qualified. Most candidates  have performed that role for several year this is already evidence that the person can do the  job but if you are less qualified you need to find other ways to express your ability. You could get this from internships, volunteer work, freelance projects and part-time work. Your CV should give your employers a reason to believe you can do the job.

5. Make your CV about relevance not history:

Don’t try to list out everything you have done, since you are competing with a lot of experienced candidates you need to point out the obvious things that make you eligible for the job. Focus on including you skills, experience and accomplishments related to the job vacancy in your CV. Your employer should not need to search through you CV to know whether you are useful or not.

6. Don’t let your lack of experience become the center of your application:

Don't emphasize on the fact that you are under qualified by doing this you may unintentionally make your employer focus on your weakness. Don’t say you do not have experience for the job just try to focus on the value that you have. Your application should tell your employer why you are good for the job not that you are not as qualified as everyone else.

7. Demonstrates your ability to learn :

Employers know that you may not know everything before you start the job. What is important is knowing that you are ready to learn. If you don’t have a particular skill show your employer that you are already trying to develop that skill.

8. Build a portfolio if your field allows it:

Having a portfolio is very useful when you do not have enough experience. It demonstrates what you can do to your employer rather than just having them depend solely on your CV. Your portfolio should contain samples, projects or any evidence that you can do your job with, this helps to demonstrate your competence.

9. Use networking to get beyond your expectations:

Employers also use networking to employ people. Networking can help you gain more opportunities discover what employers want, and even receive referrals. Even though referrals do not guarantee you the job it helps to put you above other applicants. Remember that it is best to build your networking relationship on a genuine interaction rather than just contacting someone when you need a job.

10. Prepare extremely well for the interview :

Preparing for the interview gives you an advantage that most experienced candidates don’t have. A person can have five years experience in the field but gives vague answers, has no knowledge about the company and this may not help them. If you want to pass the interview use real life examples that shows how you’ve solved problems, worked with other people, achieved results and learned something quickly.

11. Pay attention to how you communicate :

Communication influences how your employers see you. Employers usually perceive people who can communicate well as more dependable and they usually prefer these people to the ones that have more experience and better credentials. This is important because employers need someone who can communicate confidently to customers and clients.

12. Don’t compete solely on qualification:

Employers don’t usually pick people only based on qualifications they think about the result that they produce, how you will contribute to the company, will they fit in to the company and how you will grow. People that fill these places well will gain the employers favor more.
