Could AI Be The Answer To The UK’s ‘Productivity Puzzle’ in 2026

For over a decade, the UK has faced stagnant productivity. Although there has been an increase in the amount invested in technology and changes to how people work, output per hour has changed little. Due to the persistence of this problem, it has become a puzzle for organisations to try to solve.

Businesses continue to search for new ways of ensuring productivity levels remain stable, whilst battling an increasingly complex economic environment. Many of them are turning to Artificial Intelligence (AI) for a potential solution. From using AI to automate administrative tasks, to analysing large datasets quickly, some are quick to think that AI can solve almost any problem facing a business, and boost productivity at the same time.

Productivity is rarely affected by a single problem. It can be influenced by many things, from leadership to workflow design. The question for organisations as we continue into 2026 is whether AI address the root causes of the UK’s productivity puzzle and how it can be used to do so.

The Productivity Problem and AI

Productivity is affected by many things, not just because staff aren’t working hard enough.

Many organisations work across multiple systems and rely on overlapping tools and uncentralised locations for storing data. This results in time lost through the coordination of work, not the effort of staff. Workers can experience a drop in productivity when they have to navigate these kinds of environments.

Due to the lack of a singular source, it can be difficult for organisations to fix the problem reliably. Businesses can also find productivity leaking out through unclear workflows, inefficient allocation of skills and lack of attention to the work-life balance of their staff.

Businesses may think that by hiring more staff or implementing new technology, they can fix these issues, but by not addressing the real issues, they just become compounded.

Because of these problems, AI is often viewed as a breakthrough. Artificial intelligence promises businesses ways to process information faster and gives them the ability to automate repetitive tasks. It appears to give organisations a quick fix to their issues.

However, AI cannot eliminate structural problems by itself. It works with the data and systems that an organisation already uses. If a business’s priorities are unclear and processes are inconsistent, AI may not be as helpful as they expect. It is important that businesses understand what AI can do to support them, and what it can not.

Administrative Overload & Fragmented Processes

One of the biggest causes of persistently low productivity is a loss of time. Research from Adobe found that employees spend over a day a week on low-value tasks. This time sink can directly lower the productivity of the staff.

Many businesses rely on disconnected tools, accidental duplication of processes and manual data handling. This reliance creates friction as staff need to expend more effort in repetitive tasks and less in their core responsibilities.

AI can support your team by helping automate certain repetitive administrative actions. It can also help smooth checking processes by flagging duplicated inputs. AI-assisted pattern recognition can also highlight processes that take up the most time, and help businesses to streamline them. These actions help teams focus on higher-value work.

Skills Mismatch and Underutilisation

Another major contributor to the productivity puzzle is an organisation's failure to utilise its staff effectively. Many businesses already employ people wth capabilities that exceed their current role’s requirements.

Skilled employees who spend time on tasks below their potential report lower job satisfaction. CIPD reported that only 54% of overqualified graduates report being satisfied at work. This low job satisfaction can directly affect an employee’s productivity.

AI can help support a shift away from this by helping managers analyse employees' skills data, as well as their performance trends. This can help identify staff who can do more, or have skills better suited to another role. AI-supported tools can help increase visibility of the staff and help keep them engaged and satisfied.

Management Inconsistency and Unfairness

Another barrier to keeping productivity steady is inconsistency with the management team. Without standardised expectations and an uneven interpretation of policies, employees can experience confusion, and this confusion can weaken trust.

LMI UK reported that high-trust organisations experience 50% less turnover than other businesses, suggesting high trust helps keep employees engaged and invested in their work.

AI-supported systems can help management teams deliver consistency. By analysing engagement data, tracking feedback frequency, and ensuring all managers share the same information and materials, AI can highlight areas where a manager's practices may be drifting. AI can help locate blind spots and help a manager build trust within their team and management.

Artificial intelligence can definitely play a meaningful role in helping organisations address their long-standing productivity issues by increasing visibility within the workforce and supporting the workers. But AI works best when it is paired with realistic expectations.

Using AI thoughtfully and allowing it to support human decision-making, organisations will be well positioned to make steady and consistent productivity boosts in 2026 and beyond.
